After twenty years of revolutionizing indoor gardening, AeroGarden has made the difficult decision to close its doors, effective January 1, 2025. This marks the end of an era for a company that pioneered hydroponic gardening systems, making it accessible for city dwellers and plant enthusiasts alike.
AeroGarden’s contribution to the world of home gardening has been nothing short of transformative, and its closure leaves many indoor gardeners saddened.
AeroGarden's Impact on Indoor Gardening
AeroGarden was one of the first companies to make indoor gardening accessible to the masses. Founded in 2005, the brand revolutionized how people think about gardening by offering easy-to-use, soil-free hydroponic systems that require little more than water, light, and seed pods. It wasn’t just the technology that set AeroGarden apart—it was their mission to make gardening achievable for anyone, whether they lived in a tiny apartment or a suburban home.
The brand’s most significant achievements include:
- Innovating Indoor Hydroponics: AeroGarden was one of the earliest companies to make hydroponic gardening accessible and easy for everyday people, changing the landscape of indoor gardening forever.
- Award-Winning Products: Over the years, AeroGarden received several recognitions for its innovative designs and technology. The company’s products frequently appeared on “Best Of” lists from prestigious publications like Good Housekeeping and CNET.
- Widespread Availability: Their systems became available through major retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart, helping millions of customers embark on their indoor gardening journeys.
Here at Vegbed, we’ve always admired AeroGarden’s dedication to simplifying gardening. We even created a guide to growing microgreens in an AeroGarden because we truly believed in their mission to make indoor gardening accessible to everyone. AeroGarden’s approach aligned with our goals of providing sustainable gardening solutions, and their innovation inspired our own products like bamboo grow mats for eco-friendly indoor growing.
Why AeroGarden is Closing
Despite their success and innovation, AeroGarden recently announced that increasing challenges made continuing the business unsustainable. The company’s official statement didn’t go into great detail, but the news has sent ripples through the gardening community.
Their message to loyal customers reads:
"This was a difficult decision, but one that became necessary due to a number of challenges with this business. First, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your loyalty and support. Second, we intend to wind down operations in a manner that will inspire you to enjoy indoor gardening through the holiday season and beyond."
What to Expect Moving Forward
For those who still rely on AeroGarden products, the company has laid out a clear roadmap for the transition:
- Products will be available on AeroGarden’s website until October 7, 2024. After that, customers can still purchase AeroGarden systems on Amazon through the end of the year.
- Alternatives for their microgreens system. You could actually retrofit Vegbed grow mats to work with their microgreens system. It is the perfect alternative matching the texture and quality of their previous grow mats. You can find our mats here: Vegbed Grow Mats
- Customer support will remain available through the end of the transition, and customers can reach out via aerogarden.com/contact-us for assistance. Users will be able to access their accounts and order histories until March 1, 2026.
- The AeroGarden app, which supports their Wi-Fi gardens and Indoor Grow Lights, will remain available for an extended period, with updates on its future status to come. Customers can continue operating their systems manually by referring to product manuals, which are available at aerogarden.com/all-product-manuals.html.
Warranty Information and Alternatives for Seed Pods
In addition to these transition details, AeroGarden has updated its warranty policy. All AeroGarden gardens purchased on or after November 1, 2024, will come with a 90-day limited warranty, replacing the standard one-year warranty. Customers who wish to make warranty claims should follow the instructions outlined in the user manuals.
As AeroGarden prepares to close, they’ve encouraged customers to explore alternative seed pod options from other sellers to ensure they can continue using their systems well into the future. This marks a shift in the way AeroGarden customers will have to maintain their systems, but the company has made it clear that its goal is to support its community through this transition as smoothly as possible.
AeroGarden's Legacy in Indoor Gardening
AeroGarden didn’t just create products—they created a movement. Their innovative systems allowed millions of people to enjoy the rewards of growing fresh food at home. From first-time gardeners to seasoned growers, AeroGarden introduced a new way to cultivate plants without the constraints of traditional gardening.
Their closure marks the end of a pioneering chapter in the indoor gardening world. However, their influence will continue to inspire gardeners for years to come. As indoor gardening continues to grow in popularity, especially with trends like vertical farming and sustainable growing practices, AeroGarden’s legacy will remain a cornerstone of the movement.
Why It Matters:
- Innovating Indoor Gardening: AeroGarden essentially carved out a niche for home hydroponic systems, making it easy for anyone to grow plants with minimal space and effort.
- Inspiration for the Future: Though AeroGarden is closing, its innovations have laid the groundwork for future advancements in the world of indoor gardening. Companies like VegBed, which are committed to eco-friendly and sustainable growing, have drawn inspiration from AeroGarden’s vision of simple, efficient gardening for all.
As we say goodbye to AeroGarden, we encourage indoor gardeners to remain inspired. The company’s final message urges us to keep growing, especially during the colder months. While AeroGarden may no longer be with us, its spirit of innovation will live on in the indoor gardening community.
Final Thoughts
The closure of AeroGarden is bittersweet. On one hand, we celebrate their many contributions to the world of indoor gardening. On the other, we’re saddened to see them go. AeroGarden’s systems have brought the joy of gardening to homes across the world, and their impact will be remembered for years to come.
At Vegbed, we will continue to support indoor gardeners with our own sustainable growing solutions. We believe that the future of indoor gardening is bright, and we encourage our community to explore new possibilities—whether it’s growing microgreens in an AeroGarden system one last time or transitioning to other hydroponic methods.

it’s definitely been a rollercoaster for the indoor gardening community with Aerogarden’s closure scare. Their systems have been such a cornerstone for home gardeners, and it’s incredible to see how much impact they’ve had over the past 20 years. The good news is that Aerogarden recently announced plans to re-open this spring, which is a huge relief for so many of us who love their products.
That said, the uncertainty inspired us at Kanana Gardens to step up and add full Aerogarden support to our app. The Kanana Gardens App helps users track things like pH, EC, and nutrient levels while calculating the perfect mix for various plant types. It’s compatible with Aerogarden nutrients as well as other popular brands like General Hydroponics FloraSeries and Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect, giving gardeners more flexibility.
For anyone who’s worried about managing their systems in the meantime—or just looking for an easier way to grow—the app is free for up to four systems and designed to help you keep everything thriving. You can find out more at https://kanana.ca or download the Kanana Gardens app (IOS and Android).
We’re excited to see what Aerogarden brings back in the spring, but in the meantime, we’re here to help keep your gardens growing!
I do not remember what type of machine I have, Only model number #100604-BLK and I need a manuel.
I received a QYO 10 as a gift. I set it up and when I connected it to the power, the system did not turn on, neither the pump nor the light. Many of my friends and myself tried to troubleshoot it to no avail. The warranty has expired because I did not open the box for a while. I do not know how to handle this. Can you help? Thanks
